important information about artsonia
Will you be transferring out of district?
Many schools across the state and country have their own Artsonia gallery similar to ours! If you know you'll be transferring out, the staff at Artsonia can easily move your child's account from one school to the next! All you need to do is:
1. Contact me at [email protected] to request the transfer
or
2. Contact Artsonia at this link.
Will your child be creating art over the summer?
I know my daughter will! The amazing thing about Artsonia is that you can also upload artwork made from home! Images in your child's account are archived, which means they will never disappear. You can view your child's art from kindergarten up through adulthood!
Brodnicki's Gallery will reset in July
This does not mean all the artwork was deleted! All exhibits created from the 14-15 school year will be archived and the link will remain on Brodnicki's gallery page. Artworks will always be available for viewing!
Are you still having trouble getting into your child's account?
If you are still unable to access your child's gallery on Artsonia, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or contact Artsonia at this link. Students are always checking their own galleries and love it when parents and family visit and comment on their artwork!

How to Stay Creative Over the Summer:
Believe it or not, there are many things you can do this summer to help exercise your creative thinking and imagination. If you're not playing video games at home (created by digital artists, I may add), there's plenty of activities you can do outside, or traveling with the family! Here's a quote by famous artist and author, Neil Gaiman. He state to "make good art," and this can't be done unless you practice and make mistakes.
Takes pictures from any angle.
No, it's not a perfect photo, but it's a creative start! Go outside with your digital camera, phone, or kiddie camera and take some pictures! Did your friends make a good sidewalk chalk drawing? Take a picture! Is your pet rolling over funny, or frowning like Grumpy Cat, take a picture! With practice and a good eye, you can be a great photographer over the summer!
Visit a Local Museum
Any museum you visit this summer will have art attached to it! Imagine being a scientist and finding this fabulous dinosaur buried...and you have to find a way to attach the pieces together! Artists work to build structure to keep the dinosaur bones in place while on display at the Field Museum of Chicago. There are also plenty of exhibits that display artworks in their own way! The Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium also show elements of art in their displays, drawings, and perspective. And did you know art and science go hand in hand? How else can you preserve and document history? I can't forget two of my favorite museums in Chicago too: The Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art both have free times during the week, and there are kid's centers that are free to get into!
Visit Chicago!
Our local city holds many artistic treasures anywhere you walk. In Millenium Park, you can visit the Cloud City sculpture, also known as "the bean," which many of my students draw with their architecture projects. There is also the face monument, where you can dance in the water. Navy Pier will also be having sculpture walks all summer (which is also free to visit).
Sign up for a local class.
There are plenty of local places in Justice or surrounding areas that offer summer camps, classes, and activities for kids of all ages. At the Little Red Schoolhouse in Willow Springs, you can take a two week nature class. The class shows you how to identify plants, learn about local wildlife, and create artworks as keepsakes. The attached pictures was when I was a volunteer for the schoolhouse, and we were looking for tadpoles in the local pond! Don't forget I am also offering summer classes!
Renaissance Faire, anyone?
Many of your kids will tell you that their art teacher goes to the Renaissance Faire. Starting July 11th and ending Labor Day on weekends only, you will be thrown into a world of history, creativity, dance, activities, jousting, culture, and half of the attendees dressing up (like me). If you make the trip to Great America this summer, The Bristol Renaissance Faire is only 10 minutes past the Grand Ave. exit off Russell Rd. There is so much to do and see at the Renfaire, you would need more than one trip to see it all. The attached picture is an actress posing as a live sculpture (and my daughter walking up to shake her hand). Art is literally EVERYWHERE at this event. You can see the handmade costumes, displays, structures, drawings, paintings, handmade sculptures and jewelry, and more! And for the kids, there are areas created for them, like the fairy grove, the pirate ship, the climbing wall, the treasure hunt, the children's grove, the sand castle...so much I can't list them off.
Draw, draw, draw!
Even if you don't own a sketchbook, use whatever paper is laying around and draw a picture. Anything you wish! Drawing at least 5 minutes a day helps to improve your visual skills, just like reading a book improves your vocabulary! I like to create 5 minute sketches of random people I know, and over one week, I see improvement. If you have an iPad or Kindle Fire, both tablets have free drawing apps that you can install and practice without using up paper. This drawing was created by a 6th grader, and I am proud of his observation skills when drawing Wolverine!
