A Little Bit About the Class...
From grades K-6, I follow the state and national visual arts standards, which include the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture, and Space) and Principals of Design (Pattern, Rhythm, Emphasis, Unity, Balance, Movement,Repetition, Contrast, Variety), which help your children to see things in a creative perspective.
All grade levels work with a variety of materials that include: markers, pastels, ceramic clay, plaster, print-making, scratch art, painting (variety of paints), craft materials, and much more. If your child has allergic reactions to any materials (ex. latex), please notify his/her homeroom teacher and myself so we may make accommodations. Also, please know the date your child has art! Although most materials are washable, your child may have marks on their clothing after creating a new project! Please have your children come to school on art days with shirts you don't mind washing out.

Artists and Art History
We are familiar with some artist names from popular images and movies (ex. Leonardo DaVinci, Vincent Van Gogh, etc.). Students have the opportunity to learn about artists that have work with community, studied ways to promote visual thinking, and even artist who have thought “outside of the box.” Students have a chance to see that their own work can be created by using techniques similar to the artists’ creations (see left picture, caricature artist Cliff Roth, famous for his speed paintings on Google +). Many artists that are introduced in class are also presented at the Art Institute of Chicago (free evenings on Thursdays!).
Students also have an opportunity to see artwork made by artists that are in the field today. I have had the special privilege to meet many artists and have positive messages sent to our schools! Since the children can see that there are many opportunities available outside of the classroom today and in their future, I like to show the students how they can use their creative thinking skills.

Art with Literacy, Science, Math, and More! Common Core Standards
In your child's art class, I combine projects with other subject areas to help reinforce what your child learns in their general classroom. In each grade level, some projects are inspired by books read in the art room. Students also reflect upon their projects, which helps to reinforce writing skills.
We also visit science by identifying plants, animals, habitats, and anatomy within our artworks.
Math skills are also key in art. Students work on size and proportion, perspective, distance, and geometry.
Social Studies is also a key element in art. Since we also focus on art made around the world (cultural studies), we share how art has helped to shape our history and record our past.
Character Education is another important key in art. With the use of images and imagination, students learn how art can help share positive messages within our school and community.
The Indian Springs Art Team is also incorporating the Language Arts, Math, Science, and Visual Art Common Core Standards within our curriculum. In doing so, we are working together to make sure your child is reaching their potential in all subject areas.
